Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users

Microsoft has today announced the official launch date of Windows 10 for PC and tablets. From July 29, all users who own a licensed version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 can upgrade their machines to Windows 10 Home for free, if the upgrade is done within the first year (or no later than July 29, 2016). After upgrading to Windows 10, users will receive free updates for the supported lifetime of the devices.

Microsoft now has less than 2 months to present the final version of the platform, which still needs lots of refinements. The current preview version is Build 10130, which lacks some of the announced features, while others look unfinished.

Here are the most interesting new features in Windows 10 for PC and tablets:

• Universal apps and unified app store – same apps across all devices – phones, xbox, tablets, PCs from a single store
• Cortana – the digital assistant can help in many ways. She reminds you of meetings and events, shows news, responds to questions, and much more
• Microsoft Edge – the new browser is fast, supports Dolby Audio and comes with many useful features like the ability to take notes and share content
• Completely redesigned apps – Photos, Video, Settings, Xbox Live, Maps, Mail, Calendar, People have been all redesigned
• Office – new touch-friendly Office for free
• Continuum mode for an easy transformation between PC and tablet mode
• Windows Hello – biometric authentication through iris, finger or face. It requires new hardware.

The company is now notifying users about Windows 10 release with a pop-up Window on the task-bar. After clicking on the pop-up, users will be informed about all benefits of upgrading their PC to Windows 10.

Windows 10 Mobile (for Phones and Small tablets) will be released later in 2015, probably in the fall, along with new flagship Lumia smartphones.
